The former Managing Director of the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), Francis Gichiri Ndua, has passed away.

In a tribute message, KPA Managing Director Captain William Ruto described Ndua as a monumental figure in Kenya’s port development and maritime economics.

“It is with deep sorrow that we have received sad news following the passing of a monumental figure in Kenya’s maritime sector, our former Managing Director Francis Gichiri Ndua. On behalf of the Board and the entire Kenya Ports Authority family, I extend my heartfelt condolences to his loved ones and to all who had the privilege of working with him,” he said.

He hailed Ndua’s tenure as a period of major transformation at the Authority, noting that under his leadership, KPA recorded a historic milestone by handling one million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in container traffic for the first time in 2014.

“That achievement was a testament to his strategic foresight, determination, and unwavering commitment to modernization and efficiency,” Ruto added.

His death has been described as a great loss to Kenya’s maritime sector, where he is remembered as a visionary leader and one of the country’s most respected maritime economists.

Ruto said Ndua’s leadership and contribution to port and transport economics inspired many professionals across Africa and beyond.

“His legacy extends beyond numbers and titles; it is expressed in the standards of excellence he set, the institutions he helped build, and the many professionals he mentored and inspired,” he noted.

He also praised Ndua’s post-KPA contributions as a consultant and researcher, saying his wisdom and mentorship continued to shape the maritime industry long after he left office.

“While we mourn his departure, we also celebrate a life well lived — one characterized by service, integrity, and a relentless pursuit of progress for Kenya’s maritime sector and the broader economy,” Ruto said.

KPA conveyed condolences to the Ndua family, assuring them of their support during this difficult time.

“May you find strength in the memories of a life well lived and in the enduring impact of his contributions to our nation and to the global maritime community,” Ruto said.

He added that the Authority remains committed to carrying forward Ndua’s vision for a modern, competitive, and globally respected port system.
